Statement of Need The following priorities are identified as unmet needs in the Community Profile conducted by the SC Mountains to Midlands Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Community Profile directs the Affiliate to allocate funds where they are most needed.
Priority 1: Increase breast screenings by reducing structural barriers for African-Americans in Spartanburg, Oconee, Pickens, Cherokee and Newberry counties and all populations in McCormick, Abbeville, Richland and Union. Structural barriers include but are not limited to financial cost, language barriers, lack of transportation and decreased access to the continuum of care.
Priority 2: Provide access to Breast Health Patient Navigator (BHPN) programs for underserved, uninsured, and low income women in all counties of the SC Mountains to Midlands service area. BHPN programs provide a seamless approach to educating the patient and facilitating communication between the multidisciplinary treatment team. The Patient Navigator functions as a clinician, educator, researcher, counselor, healthcare liaison, consultant and patient advocate. A Patient Navigator can be a registered nurse or social worker who functions as a guide.
Priority 3: Increase survivor support services for breast cancer survivors in all counties of the SC Mountains to Midlands service area. Survivor support services include but are not limited to counseling, support groups, transitional assistance, co-survivor network, children’s counseling and end-of-life support.
Applicant support is available by appointment only. Please contact Lindsay Scott at 864-234-5035 or lindsay@komenscmm.org to schedule an appointment.
